The 2.7 RS was first developed as a homologation special. Porsche originally planned to build 500 examples in order to homologate the car for Group 4 Special GT cars series. It was launched at the Paris Motor Show in 1972. At the time it was the fastest German production car to date. With an unladen weight of 960 kg and 210 PS, the RS could accelerate to 100 kph in 5.8 seconds, and reach 150 mph. These are figures that are not to be sniffed at today, but back in 1973 they were astounding.

In testing, the car exhibited lift at high speed, and so the designers came up with a rear spoiler; what was to become the car’s distinctive trademark; its ducktail spoiler. Employing the chassis and many of the body parts of the 2.4, other distinguishing features were the wider rear arches, 6’’ and 7” Fuchs wheels, and of course the Carrera script that ran down the sides of the car.

The ‘Touring’ version shared most of its interior with the 2.4S. The ‘Lightweight’ cars (as modelled by AUTOart) were much stripped out, with simple door pulls instead of handles, lightweight bucket seats, and lighter carpeting. In Touring form the car weighed 1,075 kg. In its Lightweight configuration it was about 100 kg lighter, much of the saving coming from lighter body panels and thinner glass. The first 500 cars off the production line were made with these lighter panels, even though some were configured as Tourings. Some 1,580 cars were produced in total. The RS went on to achieve great success both on the track and in rallying, cementing its place in history as one of that great generation of sportscars that could be driven to the track, raced over the weekend, then driven home again.

The 2.7 RS was the original RS, and today it is considered to be the most iconic of all Porsches, with values of Lightweight cars, with successful racing provenance, commanding upwards of a million pounds.
