Max Verstappen’s path to Formula One was meteoric to say the least. The Dutchman’s first season of car racing was in 2014, when he placed third in the European Formula 3 Championship. By the end of the year he had already made his first official Formula One grand prix weekend debut, after driving for Toro Rosso in a handful of FP1 sessions.

For 2015 he was a fully fledged F1 driver, making his grand prix debut in Australia and becoming the youngest ever Formula One driver at just 17 years and 166 days old. In the next race at Singapore he finished seventh, becoming the youngest ever points scorer as well. He would score nine more points finishes before his rookie campaign was completed, with a couple of fourth places his best results.

In 2016 Verstappen found himself promoted to the Red Bull team after just four races. His first race for the senior team was at the Spanish Grand Prix, and he took a sensational win after Mercedes team-mates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg infamously collided on the first lap. This meant that he added a new record to the list; youngest ever race winner, at 18 years and 228 days old. He would add six more podium finishes over the rest of the year to finish fifth in the drivers’ championship.

Wins were hard to come by during this Mercedes-dominated period of the sport, but Verstappen was able to add another nine grand prix victories to his tally from 2017 to 2020, and was third in the standings in both 2019 and 2020.

In 2021 Max had a car that was able to fight for the championship for the first time, and he engaged in a battle royale with Mercedes’ Hamilton throughout the season, with no small amount of controversy involved. That included the last race of the campaign, when Verstappen passed his title rival on the very last lap (following a somewhat dubious call from the race director to allow a shoot-out to the chequered flag) to secure his 10th win of the year and his first world championship.

2022 and 2023 were essentially cakewalks for Verstappen as Red Bull dominated the sport; the Dutchman set a new all-time record of 15 grand prix victories in a single season in 2022, increasing that marker to 19 a year later. He also set a new all-time record of 10 consecutive wins in the latter campaign, and scored his 50th F1 win in the American Grand Prix.
