Lewis Hamilton quickly made his way through the junior single seater ranks, winning the Formula Renault UK championship in 2003 and the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2005. The final rung on the ladder below Formula One was GP2, which he won at his first attempt in 2006. In 2007 he made his Formula One debut with the McLaren team.

With reigning double world champion Fernando Alonso as his team-mate, it was expected that Hamilton would play a subservient role in his rookie F1 campaign. Not a bit of it; he scored four grand prix wins and ended the season tied on points with Alonso, just one point behind world champion Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari. Irked by the internecine challenge from within his own team, Alonso left McLaren at the end of the year.

In 2008 Hamilton engaged in a year-long battle for the world championship with Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, winning five races. Lewis looked set to lose out as the final race drew to a conclusion, but a stunning pass on Toyota’s Timo Glock at the final corner on the very last lap of the season saw him snatch his first world title from his rival.

From 2009 to 2012 Hamilton and McLaren were unable to put a championship challenge together; they scored several race wins during that period, but were unable to mount a consistent challenge to Red Bull. In 2013 Lewis left McLaren for a new challenge at Mercedes, scoring one win in his first season for the German team.

After that, though, the floodgates opened; Mercedes completely dominated the Formula One world championship from the introduction of the new turbo engine rules set in 2014. Hamilton won the world championship in 2014 and 2015, and only narrowly missed out to team-mate Nico Rosberg in 2016. Lewis then won four more titles on the bounce from 2017 to 2020, equalling Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of seven world championships. In 2020 he also surpassed the German’s all-time record of 91 grand prix wins.

2021 saw Hamilton locked in a titanic title scrap with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, with no little amount of controversy. Lewis ultimately lost out to the Dutchman after being overtaken by him on the very last lap of the season, following a somewhat dubious call from the race director to allow a shoot-out to the chequered flag. The British driver did at least record the milestone achievement of a 100th career grand prix victory during the year.

Red Bull’s domination of Formula One in 2022 saw Hamilton fail to win a grand prix for the first time in his career, an unwelcome statistic that was repeated in 2023. Lewis at last returned to the top step of the podium in 2024, scoring two wins, but before the season had even started it was announced that he would be joining Ferrari in 2025.
