Fernando Alonso didn’t spend long at all in the junior single-seater formulae, winning the Euro Open by Nissan series in 1999 and then placing fourth in the Formula 3000 championship in 2000 before entering Formula One with Minardi in 2001.
The Spaniard spent his rookie season gaining experience in what was by far the slowest car on the grid, before spending 2002 on the sidelines as Renault’s test and reserve driver. He was promoted to a race seat the following year, immediately making an impression by scoring his first grand prix win in Hungary.
Alonso failed to add any further victories in 2004 as Ferrari absolutely dominated the season, but in 2005 and 2006 he had a car that was able to contend for the world championship, and he duly delivered. In 2005 he came out on top of a battle with McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen, while a year later his title rival was Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher.
Fernando took the #1 to McLaren for 2007, but he would leave the team after only one season following a contentious campaign, only narrowly failing to add a third Formula One world championship to his CV. He returned to Renault, which was now a shadow of its former self, and he rarely stood on the podium, although he did score back-to-back wins in the 2008 Singapore and Japanese Grands Prix.
The Spaniard joined Ferrari for 2010 and would only just fail in his quest to return the drivers’ crown to the Scuderia, finishing runner-up in the drivers’ points three times in four years. Ferrari lost competitiveness for 2014 which led to Alonso rejoining McLaren for 2015, but that turned out to be a disastrous move as the team was just entering an extremely uncompetitive period. Never mind podiums, it was a struggle for the double world champion to even get into the points.
Things improved slightly for 2018 as McLaren ditched its woeful Honda engines for Renault power units, but Fernando had become disillusioned with Formula One and took a break away from the top tier of the sport at the end of the season. He had a couple of attempts at the Indianapolis 500 but found considerably greater success in the sportscar racing, winning the Le Mans 24 Hours in both 2018 and 2019 (and the Daytona 24 Hours in the latter year), as well as claiming the 2018-19 World Endurance Championship.
Alonso returned to the Formula One world championship with Alpine in 2021, scoring his first grand prix podium for seven years towards the end of the season. He stayed with the French squad for 2022 before joining Aston Martin for the 2023 F1 world championship. The pairing enjoyed a hugely successful start to their relationship, scoring five podium finishes in their first six races together. Another three rostrums before the end of the year saw Fernando place fourth in the drivers’ championship, which was his best result for 10 years.
Fernando Alonso remains with Aston Martin for the 2024 Formula One world championship.
