'High In The Sunlit Silence' Spitfire print signed by Johnnie Johnson Product Information
'High In The Sunlit Silence' Spitfire print signed by artist Michael Rondot and pilot Johnnie Johnson. A sunset portrayal of a Spitfire among towering clouds, published to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Johnson was the highest scoring pilot to survive the war. He shot down 38 enemy aircraft in the skies over Western Europe between June 1941 and September 1944. This tally is remarkable on two counts. First, Johnson began his operational career after the end of the Battle of Britain, which provided such a rich harvest of combat victories for many of his peers. And secondly, because all of Johnson's victories, with the exception of a quarter share in a Messerschmitt 110, were against single seater fighters, which were easily the most formidable opponents. His last victory came in September 1944 over the Falaise Gap. He shot down an FW190 that day but himself sustained damage (his first of the war), when his aircraft was struck by a single cannon shell. He stayed in service with the RAF after the war, reaching the rank of Air-Vice Marshall, having been decorated with a CB, CBE, DSO and two Bar, DFC and Bar. He truly was one of the few. Print measures 50cm down x 62cm across. Individually numbered limited edition of 850.
