Mercedes first entered the Formula One world championship in 1954, dominating the sport for two years with Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss. The manufacturer withdrew from all forms of motor racing at the end of the 1955 season following the disaster at Le Mans in which 83 spectators lost their lives.

Mercedes returned to Formula One as an engine supplier in the mid-1990s, with McLaren its most prolific customer. The two concerns achieved success together in the drivers’ world championship with Mika Hakkinen in 1998 and 1999, and Lewis Hamilton in 2008. Mercedes then powered Brawn’s Jenson Button to the world championship in 2009, before buying the Brawn team to enter Formula One as a team in its own right in 2010.

Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg initially raced for the new Mercedes team, before Schumacher retired at the end of the 2012 season to be replaced by Hamilton. Rosberg and Hamilton scored three grand prix wins between them during the 2013 Formula One world championship, but Mercedes would completely dominate the sport from the introduction of the new turbo engine rules set in 2014.

The team won seven straight drivers’ and constructors’ world championships from 2014 to 2020, with six world titles for Hamilton and one for Rosberg. Rosberg retired after winning the 2016 championship, to be replaced by Valtteri Bottas. Mercedes also won an eighth consecutive constructors’ world championship in 2021, when Red Bull’s Max Verstappen contentiously beat Hamilton to the drivers’ crown.

From 2022 to 2024 Hamilton was teamed with George Russell. The team only scored one grand prix victory in 2022 (with Russell), and none at all in 2023. In 2024 both drivers scored two wins each, and at the end of the year Hamilton left for pastures new at Ferrari, to be replaced by exciting young Italian prospect Andrea Kimi Antonelli for 2025.
